"Tracked events" is the honest label: this counts everything DriveBC reported — full closures, partial delays, winter road-condition advisories, incidents and construction. Full-closure-severity records account for 4,122 of the 65,515 total.

Coquihalla (Hwy 5) is second at 10,364 events, and the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C) is third at 9,393.

Rogers Pass averages about 771 tracked events per year — roughly two a day. That includes winter road-condition advisories, avalanche control closures, incidents and construction. Full closures (severity MAJOR) account for 4,122 of the 65,515 network-wide events on record.
What causes most BC highway disruptions?+
Winter road conditions are by a wide margin the biggest driver: 35,619 of 65,515 events (54%) are classified as "road condition" advisories. Construction and planned work is next (17,779, 27%), followed by incidents (6,918) and pure weather events (5,120). The seasonal chart above shows the same story — Jan/Feb/Nov/Dec dominate.
Are BC highway closures getting better or worse over time?+
Looking only at the modern-schema years (2018–2025), the average has fallen from about 5,268 tracked events per year in 2018–2021 to about 4,462 in 2022–2025 — a 15.3% decline. That is at least partly a reporting-practice change (DriveBC has consolidated some advisory types), not purely fewer real-world disruptions. Longer-term comparisons are unreliable because 2013–2017 files use a much sparser legacy schema.
Where does this data come from?+
The BC Government's open Historical DriveBC Events dataset (2006–2025 annual CSVs) combined with our own live-tracking snapshots for 2026. See the methodology note below for the honest caveats — including that event types are a mix of full closures and lower-severity advisories, and that only 46.1% of records have an end time.
Methodology & honest caveats
Source: The BC Government's public Historical DriveBC Events dataset (annual CSVs, 2006–2025) combined with RoadsBC's own live snapshots of DriveBC and BC Ferries feeds for 2026.
Corridors: Each row was assigned to one of nine corridors by matching the source's road name (and, when ambiguous, a geographic bounding box) — for example, both Hope–Princeton and Kootenay Pass sit on Highway 3, so they're separated by longitude.
"Tracked events" vs. "closures": The dataset mixes full closures, delayed traffic, winter road-condition advisories, incidents and planned construction. About 54% of records are road-condition advisories. Full-closure-severity records (4,122) are a subset — we've kept the broader "tracked events" number as the primary metric to avoid overstating.
Missing end times: Only 30,204 of 65,515 rows (46.1%) have an end timestamp populated — so we deliberately do not publish a network-wide "average closure length" statistic. Any per-event duration would silently exclude more than half of the data.
Schema changes: 2006–2012 files use an older schema, 2013–2017 files a much sparser one, and 2018+ files adopt the Open511 schema. Cross-era counts are directional at best; the year-over-year chart flags the sparse legacy years explicitly.
